How to Save Big On Car Insurance

Do you own a car? Is the vehicle registered in your name? Guess what? ... now you need car insurance! If you do not purchase car insurance, you are subject to fines, fees, driver's license suspensions, vehicle registration suspension and more ... depending on what state your vehicle is registered in.

This is why everyone loves insurance! Seriously, all kidding aside. Car insurance is one of those things that you are required by law to pay for, but don't really see the benefit unless something happens. When that accident occurs ... knock on wood, now it's up to your insurance company. Cross your fingers, pray to your god, and hope it's a good insurance company you have been paying money to the whole time!

These tips will show you how to pay the lowest on car insurance, and still insure with a reputable company.

Joe Bobs Insurance is not a reputable insurance company that will be in business 100 years from now!

  1. Before you contact any insurance companies, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Yes, I said it...the DMV. It's a bad word to some people so I apologize for writing it. But this is important. Contact your DMV and ask for a copy of your driving record. This will come in handy when you are calling around to get quotes from different insurance companies.

    You really want to go back 5 years. Ask yourself, "in the past 5 years have I had any tickets or accidents not including parking tickets?" (Parking tickets are not moving violations and will not affect your insurance policy).

  2. Now it's time to gather all of your personal information. Before calling to get a quote, you should have the following information written down:

    * VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
    * YEAR, MAKE, MODEL OF VEHICLE
    * ADDRESS (including zip code),
    * SPOUSE INFORMATION (If applicable, or other drivers info)
    * DATE PREVIOUS INSURANCE CANCELLED
    * YOUR OCCUPATION (spouses occupation if applicable)
    * DOB
    * AGE FIRST LICENSED (Including In Other Countries)
    * TICKETS/ACCIDENTS WITHIN PAST 5 YEARS (***companies will always go back 5 years even though they only ask for activity in the last 3 years***)
    * USAGE OF YOUR VEHICLE: Including: Do you use your vehicle for work, school or personal use? If so, how many days per week and how many miles one way from the house to work/school? How many miles a year do you drive? (This can make a huge difference in your premium!) (The Less Miles You Drive, The Better. Time to Carpool!)
    * COVERAGE YOU WANT (If you don't care and just want the cheapest, just ask the sales agent for the state requirements and they will give you the minimal liability limits that your state requires you to carry, which will not cover damage to your vehicle.

  3. Ok, so now you have gathered all of your information to get an accurate quote. All you need to do now is be honest! Time to call the insurance companies.

    I would recommend that you get a quote with 3 different companies. Keep in mind that when it comes to insurance, there is no such thing as "price matching"...so don't try it! Just give all three insurance companies the same information in STEP 2 that you gathered and don't leave anything out! If you leave something out, you may get a better insurance rate for a month and then get a nice rate jump at the end.

    (INSURANCE COMPANIES IN MOST STATES LEGALLY HAVE UP TO 30 DAYS TO RUN YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE REPORT AND INCREASE YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUM.)

    ...so it's just better for you to be honest when getting quotes.

  4. After you have given all your personal information and the company gives you a quote, you need to talk about details.

    (A CAR INSURANCE COMPANY MAY BE LESS MONTHLY, BUT MAY ALSO CHARGE FEES OR INTEREST WHICH, OVER TIME, CAN ADD UP TOO TWICE OR THREE TIMES THE PREMIUM YOU WERE QUOTED)

    Ask the agent if their company charges to:

    1) Make a payment over the phone
    2) Request Paperwork
    3) Cancel Policy
    4) Interest fees
    5) Payment Plan Installment Fees
    6) Late Payment Fees
    7) Other Fees
    8) How Much Time Will They Give you If You Need To Make the Payment Late?

  5. After you have received three quotes from 3 different companies, it is now time to decide which company is offering the best deal overall. You need to consider all off the facts.

    Also, I recommend that you consider how long a company has been in business, are they nationwide, 24 hours service and claims? Get any and all information on the insurance company that you can to insure you are happy with your final purchase.

  6. Now you are all done! Just make your down payment, get your id cards and you are good to go! Just drive safely and never drink and drive! Now your golden! Look forward to a low insurance rate for years to come.
