Information On Bactrim DS Drug

A brand-name medication, Bactrim Double-Strength (DS) contains a combination of the drugs sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Doctors commonly prescribe Bactrim DS for the treatment of certain types of infections caused by bacteria.

    Function

  1. Bactrim DS works by preventing bacteria cells from producing certain chemicals necessary for the bacteria to grow and spread. Without these chemicals, the bacteria becomes weak and eventually dies.
  2. Uses

  3. Bactrim DS is effective for infections of the urinary tract, middle ear and bronchitis as well as for traveler's diarrhea and some types of bacterial pneumonia. The drug has the potential to kill the Shigella, Pneumocystis carinii, E. coli, Streptococcus, H. influenzae, Klebsiella and Enterobacter species of bacteria.
  4. Features

  5. One tablet of Bactrim DS contains 160 mg trimethoprim and 800 mg sulfamethoxazole, compared to the 80 mg trimethoprim and 400 mg sulfamethoxazole found in the regular version of Bactrim, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  6. Time Frame

  7. The amount of time doctors prescribe Bactrim DS varies depending on the type of the illness, but in most cases, a course of the antibiotic lasts 10 to 21 days, reports the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  8. Considerations

  9. Bactrim DS is not safe for use in children under 2 months of age. If you have a history of anemia, asthma, folate deficiency, HIV, kidney or liver disease or seizures, it may not be safe for you to take Bactrim DS, warns the Mayo Clinic.
