Have
your mail held at the post office, or have a trusted neighbor or friend
empty your mailbox everyday. If you are having your mail held, start
this a day or two before you leave in case the post office has made a
mistake.
Put your indoor and outdoor lights on a timer. Set this up a few days before you leave so you can ensure they are set properly.
Disconnect non-essential electrical appliances and turn down your thermostat while you are gone.
Clear any snow or ice on your walkways and driveway before you leave.
Lock basement windows and garage doors.
Leave a key and an itinerary with a friend or family member in case of a delay or an emergency.
Ask a neighbor or family member to check on your house if a winter storm occurs and to shovel or pick up debris, if necessary.
